Demons, death threats...
and Christmas shopping.
It's gonna be one Hell of a Holiday.
In the third in the popular Adrien English series, the "ill-starred and bookish" mystery writer has to contend with a Satanic cult, a handsome university professor and his on-again/off-again relationship with the eternally conflicted LAPD Detective Jake Riordan.
And, oh, yes, murder...

I should have written a review after I finished each book, but since I didn't, this is a review of the entire series (no spoilers):I love this entire series. In all earnestness. It is so clever, so funny, so unique, so beautiful, just the best...probably my favorite series of all time. Josh Lanyon is probably also my favorite author because no matter how short or long the story he spins is, you always become invested in its outcome and enjoy its duration. Adrien and Jake...wow...I just love those two with all my heart. Even when I was pissed off at one or both. There's five books, and so much goes on between Jake and Adrien, and outside of them, that the story is so hard at times, spans years, and works through a lot of obstacles, but you enjoy every second of it. The mysteries are so well written, that you really have no idea who done it until Adrien knows (and I usually can guess beforehand with other authors). The characters are all so distinctive and unique and colorful that you react to them on way or another.
Things never turn out how you think, some parts pain your heart, sometimes you're sitting there yelling at the book and waving your arms around, sometimes you are tearing up, sometimes you are laughing until your abs hurt, sometimes you are hoping so hard it consumes your head, and sometimes you are smiling so hard and wide and so happily that you feel all warm inside. And through it all, you won't be able to get Adrien and Jake out of your head (nor will you want to). I don't quite hold all other books to these because I know none will stand up to them, but they easily take the cake. I really can't say enough about or fully describe the intricacies of Lanyon's writing or how he just sunk a hole in one with this series, I can only urge you with all of my heart to read it, and I will buy all of them in paperback (I have them now on kindle) to reread sometime soon. Plus I still have the interactive sixth book to enjoy! So, potential reader, the bottom line is that Adrien and Jake and their mysteries will worm their way into your heart, and will never get out, so just read, enjoy, and cherish.
P.S. After you read "The Dark Tide" (the fifth book), read the interview Josh Lanyon did answering lingering questions about the end of the series (or more accurately, clearing up a few things and "checking in" with the characters about their life sixth months after the conclusion of the series).

The Hell You Say The Adrien English Mysteries Book 3 edition by Josh Lanyon Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The plot is moving really slow in this one, even more so than the last 2. The occult is really interesting but I think it's a missed opportunity that we didn't get to explore the motives behind the murders.
The characters still aren't likable but the sisters seem genuinely nice and that's a change for the better I guess. I like Adrien but he really leads a miserable life. And I think that's the thing that gets me down the most. Throughout the whole book, the mood kept going down, down, and down. In the second book, at least things looked good for him and Jake. Now he's back at square one.
Spoilers
I'm not sure if Jake's "girlfriend" knew about Adrien, probably not considering Jake's so deep in the closet. Unless their thing is casual, it would make me hate Jake even more. Even if he's not apologizing to Adrien (he should given he got violent) he should to his fiancé. Still, I think Jake will come around in the end.
Pretty damned good read. Spoiler alert for those who don't want to know anything about whats in the book.
This one starts with Adrien giving his assistant Angus money to get out of town. Seems Angus is involved in some Satanic crap as evidenced by some rather disturbing phone calls he's been getting. Little does Adrien know his giving Angus money is going to land him in some trouble.
Jake Riordan also lays some heavy crap on Adrien when he tells him his girlfriend, another cop, is pregnant. So far marriage isn't on the table but Adrien knows he and Jake are headed for trouble.
Jake is bi sexual and he and Aiden have hit the sack many times. Jake is also a cop and doesn't want to come out of his closet. Jake is scared to death some of his cop buddies will find out he likes Aiden who is gay and in fact has had sex with Aiden. He also likes woman, hence his pregnant girlfriend. Tough row to hoe for Jake and even tougher for Aiden.
Adrien's Mother, Lisa, then tells him she's getting married. Its been many years since Adrien's Father died and Lisa has never wanted to remarry and lo and behold the new family consists of Coucilman Bill Dauten and his three daughters. Adrien can see the writing on the wall. This will not be easy.
Of course Lisa is always worried about Adrien's heart. She's treated him like an invalid since he suffered with rhumatic fever as a sixteen year old. He's on meds for the problem and so far it hasn't affected him. Try telling that to Lisa. Not easy. Everyone, Jake included, is more worred about Adriens heart problems than Adrien is.
Once Angus leaves Adrien has to hire a new assistant. He went through two before Velvet showed up at his door looking for work. Adrien finds this woman very suspicious but he needs help and there she is. He hires her only to find she's one snoopy woman.
Seems there have been a couple of bodies found. Victims of Satanic rituals and Angus is the prime suspect. Police come to question Adrien about the whereabouts of Angus. They aren't the only ones looking or Angus. The others looking for him are also part of a group of Satanic worshipers.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has Adrien, Jake, Lisa, Bill and his family, a college professor named Snowden, a man named Oliver who's far more than he appears to be, a missing author named Savant and his right hand man, murder, Jake telling Adrien his future plans, an Adrien doing his best ot deal with this info, Satanic rituals, a mansion in a very rich part of Town and Adrien English doing his best to figure it out and stay out of the picture, get the info and pass it to the police and stay alive.
Five Stars once again.
