Real Soldiers of Fortune Richard Harding Davis 9781117731070 Books
A fascinating glimpse back to the "age of adventure". Written as a contemporary account of a series of "Soldiers of Fortune" by the famous journalist, Richard Harding Davis. The writing is snappy, engaging and evokes a certain atmosphere of the time. One can almost imagine reading this in their cabin aboard a steamer on its way to Cairo.I was quite surprised to find one of the "characters' outlined to be the young Winston Churchill. Harding was quite taken with the young Churchill and makes some predictions about the man that in hindsight prove to be quite astute.
For any history buff of anyone interesting in colorful character studies this book is a goldmine.

Real Soldiers of Fortune Richard Harding Davis 9781117731070 Books Reviews
A good read ,without much detail. Having read several other similar , associated books, I would recommend this as an entry into the subject area.Real Heroes and adventurers .
Good read
Hard to see Churchill as a soldier of fortune, as he clearly appeared at the time, before his political rise. The others are held up a paragons when in fact, you would likely disagree. It's interesting to ponder how single individuals can have such devastating impact on events and yet be thought heroes by many.
Great read. Specially the chapter on young Winston. There was some detail in this I had not read before. The other unknowns were certainly worthy of their places in this book. Interesting point that this book appears to have been written about 1930?? Anyway, there is much to like about the gung ho attitude of these "soldiers" as it is most believable and when looking for modern day equivalents stands alone without challenge. Take a quick read. I am sure you will find it enjoyable.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. It was entertaining and informative, and I learned the sometimes sad stories of those men who were true "originals". The subjects of this book are not ones we have learned of in normal educational channels. Some of them are related in some way to people we learned about in school, although most of these men were previously unknown to me. They did, however, each have a distinct impact on the world of their time.
Fascinating compact glimpse into the lives of some very interesting people. The coverage of Churchhill's earlier years brought out some aspects of the man I had not imagined.
As a long time admirer of Richard Harding Davis it was a pleasure to receive this readable copy of what may have been his greatest work. Fascinating because American entrepreneurs are the heroes. And rightly so. A definitive political slant. Love it. A worthy companion piece is Brady Harrison's 2006 edition which includes a personal history of Richard Harding Davis, accompanied by reviews from The New York Times (5 June 1897), The Atlantic Monthly (December 1897) and The Nation 20 January 1898) followed by articles relative to the notion of Anglo-American superiority, and several pieces by Theodore Roosevelt, all worthwhile for a variety of political reasons that "echo the debates" surrounding Vietnam and Iraq including President Roosevelt's assessment of Davis as a man, a reporter, and companion in battle. There is more in Mr. Harrison's book and much of it is complex and contradictory. All of it to be treasured and digested as part of our American heritage. Get 'em while they're hot.
